Migrate Sql Database Server To Azure

Indeed, migrating your SQL Server database to Azure need not be complicated nor overly time-consuming. The process is quite simple, and you should be able to get it right the first time. Start by creating an empty SQL database in Azure, and then you can import your database via the Data Migration Assistant (DMA).

Before we begin, you'll need to make sure you have a few pre-requisites in order:

1) Start by making sure you have the latest version of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), or you'll have to update the one you have now.
2) Next, go ahead and install the latest version of DMA
3) Be sure you have proper user privileges to the database you intend to migrate.
4) Verify that your login credentials are working on your Azure User Portal.
5) Finally, create a blank database in Azure.

Now that you have all of your prerequisites, you can create a new blank SQL database in Azure. Log into your Azure user portal, and click on the "Create a Resource" tab. Then click on "New" to select your database, and choose "Create." Fill out the simple SQL Database form with all the pertinent information.

Next, take a little time to explore the different service tiers, and find the one that's right for you. To migrate a SQL database server to Azure easily, we recommend you choose the "Standard" service tier. Agree to the terms, accept, and then click "Apply," next, you'll create a server-level firewall rule.

The SQL Database will automatically create a firewall to block outside applications from linking to your databases and server. That's why you will need to create a server firewall rule for your IP addresses. Creating a new firewall rule will allow external connectivity for your IP address.

Note, Port 1433 is the default port used by SQL Database. Unfortunately, outbound traffic may not work over port 1433. This is especially true for corporate networks. If your network's firewall prevents outbound traffic over port 1433, you will need to open it before you can create a firewall rule.

Next, click "SQL Databases" from the menu and click "my sample database" on the SQL Databases page. After you click on "my sample database, you see your server name displayed. Make sure you copy this server name so you can connect it to your server.

Choose to "Set Server Firewall" on the toolbar. When the next page opens, click "Add Client" to add your IP address to a new firewall rule. Then, click "Save," and you've created a new firewall rule for your present IP address. Great job! You're well on your to migrating your SQL database server to Azure.

You'll now be able to connect the SQL Database server to Management Studio, DMA, and other tools from your current IP address using your server admin account.

Log in to your Azure portal.

Choose "SQL Databases" from the menu bar, and click on your database. Then, paste your server name.

Now, open the DMA. DMA runs on any computer. Just make sure its connected to the SQL server with the database you wish to migrate, and of course, you need to be online. Conveniently, you won't need to install the DMA on the computer hosting your SQL server instance that you're migrating. However, the new firewall rule you created does need to be on the computer your using to run DMA.

Open your menu and click "New" to create a new assessment project. Add your information to the requested values, and then click "Create." Follow the prompts. Congratulations, you've successfully migrated your SQL database server to Azure.
